One point that hasn't been pointed out is that good hinting improves appearance *at low resolutions*. Past 600 dpi for output, hinting really doesn't figure in. Computer screens generally run at 72 or 96 dpi, rarely over 100-something. So hinting is important for text that will be viewed onscreen. I suppose some people are still using 300 dpi printers to output text and hinting will help there, too. But if your printer is 600 dpi or more, hinting doesn't much matter, and for imagesetters, not at all. --Judy M. USA
