This isn't a size difference compared to another product, it is a size 
difference between a PDF made one day and another made the next day of the same 
file with the same program.

There's a reason for that.  Most programs give the positioning for the 
first character of each line, followed by the string of characters. 
Scribus places each character separately.  This makes the file bigger 
but it also allows for very precise kerning making for a much better 
looking, more professional product.
