I always found this clumsy but must admit I never thought of using the scroll wheel... With the scroll wheel this is, indeed, a usable method for "interactive cropping". I drop my proposal :) . One nitpick, though: Initially, X-Scale and Y-Scale are not locked together. I think it is better to lock them by default since I assume most pictures will be scaled proportionally.
