I typically have up to three versions of scribus installed under windows. At the moment there's 1.4.0, 1.4.1 and 1.4.2svn. Every now and then I purge some old ones. I've been doing this for a while, but not noticed any problems. If I had lost a file association, I'd probably have just pointed it back to the version I wanted to use. As far as I've been concerned it's worked fine though.
