There's (almost) always a workaround. Unless you are going to have images covering up the numbering on all pages, you can just do this selectively. Let's imagine that you have created a master page with a small text frame and a Page Number character in it. For this page numbering to work, it doesn't have to be on a Master Page. So, with that in mind, go to the Master Page, right-click the frame with the page number and Send to... Scrapbook. Close your Master Page editing. Now go to the page where the image is covering up the number, open the Scrapbook and right-click on the page number frame. One of the choices will be Paste to Page. Choose that, and the frame will be pasted exactly where it was on the Master Page and over your image, and will have the correct page number in it. Greg
