Yes, especially in Scribus, using styles makes things a lot easier.

I feel direct formatting in Scribus is a lot less intuitive than for
example in Word.

I don't use Scribus a lot nowadays, but I very rarely use direct
formatting. I either set the format for the frame (if all text in the
frame is supposed to have the same format) or I create styles.
Anything else I think becomes too hard to keep track of.
