Yes,
Cmake fails with the debian harfbuzz, as you note, it is missing
harfbuzz-subset.
All I did was to download the source at
https://github.com/harfbuzz/harfbuzz and built it into /opt for the
reasons stated.
The Scribus version is shown as 1.5.8.
I did try "make" with the harfbuzz-subset missing, but make failed.
Could not find an option to exclude harfbuzz.
As I no longer have the Ubuntu installation, I cannot comment on what I
did there.
Interestingly, the CMakeLists.txt has reference to Qt6, so I wonder when
that is going to happen.

Installed Debian-11.1. The BUILDING states that Scribus "Can't be

The problem would appear to be harfbuzz, the debian repository doesn't
have it all.
Mh, that's not correct though?!
How do you call this otherwise? https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/harfbuzz
What is still missing is harfbuzz-subset, which will come with version
3
of it though. But it's an optional dependency so "can't be built" is
surely wrong.
So now I have a nice new Scribus 1.5.8.svn (r24748)
BTW, 1.5.7 is available from the Debian repositories, so unless you
really have a need for the SVN snapshot you can probably make do with
that.
Uh, actually now I remember that Debian 11 only has 1.5.6.1… let me
upload 1.5.7 to bullseye-backports.
Also installed the latest Ubuntu 21.04 or 21.10 then built Scribus on
that. No problems at all and guess the Ubuntu repositories have the
"full" harfbuzz needed for building.
Ubuntu has the same harfbuzz that Debian has, fwiw.
It really is a very nice program and thanks to all who have made it
possible.
:)
