Hi all of you who were interested in developing apps for speech recognition technology.
Below is a message from the ms-speech group at yahoo groups (this group is primarily interested in Windows Speech Recognition, but a large amount of Dragon topics are also discussed). Just wanted you to know that Windows 10 evidently has a new technology known as “Cortana” (I know nothing about this), which is incompatible with WSR. Right now, the ms-speech messages are urging everyone to write to microsoft to express your support for WSR, and to request that MS work on making WSR and Cortana work together. Without this, there will be little future for WSR (it will be limitted to those of us having Vista through Windows 8.1). Also, for those who may be scripting an app for Dragon, you may wish to know that when Windows 10 is released, evidently the only version of Dragon which will function with it will be Dragon 13 (the good news is that you don’t have to try to support multiple versions of Dragon, but the bad news is that it will limit your market somewhat). Anyone interested in scripting speech related apps may wish to join this yahoo group (and if you’re using WSR, check out the “files” area of the group, as it has a lot of WSR macros which you can download, along with articles, to help you learn their scripting). If you don’t have a yahoo account, you can join by simply sending an email to [email protected] (but this doesn’t give you access to the “files” area; for that you will need to create a yahoo account, which I have found to be a tedious process, followed by dealing with the tedious “security” yahoo layers on top). Cortana blocking WSR in Windows 10 Apologies for popping in late but I have a few Cortana updates which might be of interest: 1. As you already know, in Windows 10, Cortana and WSR cannot be simultaneously active. This information has recently been covered on this forum. 2. Dragon 13 does not currently work with Windows 10 but since Windows 10 is still in beta, this should not be a concern; unless you are running Windows 10 on your main computer. Nuance's livelihood depends on the Windows operating system so at the very least, you can expect a Dragon 13 patch when Windows 10 is officially released. However, you can also expect no support for any Dragon product predating Dragon 13. 3. Microsoft employees are only allowed to discuss Cortana on an extremely limited basis. For example, their NDA prevents them from discussing whether or not they have an API which can be used to hook a macro utility into. Believe me when I tell you, I'm keeping a close watch on this. We are currently in the middle of developing a version of KnowBrainer 2015 to support Windows 10 but we are currently limited to WSR which, depending on how successful Cortana is, may tie our hands. If Cortana works well, we may not want to waste time developing command technology for WSR which could be in an end of days cycle. What we can say is that KnowBrainer 2015 (currently supporting WSR) is nearly finished. We are well into the command technology that already includes thousands of prefab Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Skype commands along with the ability to build VB macros by voice via our patented VerbalBasic technology. We're going to be supporting Microsoft in a big way but until we can figure out which direction Microsoft is going in, we will be delayed.
