A comment just made on the Advocacy list just got me thinking. Seems
that it would be nice to have a collection of Anti-Matt scripts -
Well-written alternatives to Matt Wright's programs that will
gracelessly die on January 1, 19100. I have an alternative to wwwboard,
and I'm sure that most of us have something that serves the same purpose
as formmail.pl, except that it will work next month.
The discussion board thing is a tarball, and so won't work in the
Scripts section just yet. But it would be very nice to have some of the
other things, so that when we see people using Matt's code, we have
something else to point them towards.
We've been making fun of Matt's code for several years now, but the fact
is that there is no nice convenient place to go for alternatives. And
whether or not we think that guestbooks and counters are useful things
to have, the fact is that a lot of people out there want them, and Matt
Wright is providing them.
It would indeed be a good service to the unwashed masses of Perl users
(note, not Perl programers, but Perl users) out there, if when we say
"never use anything by Matt", we could say "instead, use the stuff in
the Scripts/CGI section of CPAN.
Thoughts? I'm going to start looking through some stuff I have laying
around and see if I can scrape together some stuff to upload. Does
anyone else think that this is a good idea?
