If you really want to use those simple programmers and your
computer has a parallel port, try WinPIC and some parallel port
based programmer. They are at least better than the junk serial port
based JDM or similar.

Under Linux, you could use Piklab or odyssey.

Piklab supports ICD2, PICkit 2 (v1.x firmware) and other programmers
under Linux and it serves as an IDE for gputils/sdcc.
