I found out about the existence of sdcc-hc08 several 
years ago but have never looked into it. I also do not 
recall any discussion about it. It was forked before I 
started working on SDCC. Nevertheless it seems quite 
dead. Since then SDCC has had several improvements 
including on the hc08 target.

If I read the claim for better code correctly it boils 
down to making all functions reentrant which SDCC can do 
with --stack-auto. Indeed that can sometimes be a good 
RAM saver.
