Regarding the IDE thing, I must say that in my work I use and I am very satisfied with CodeBlocks. Has almost everything that I need from an IDE. It works with a lot of languages and it includes SDCC. With it I make code for T89C51CC01 from Atmel for our home made boards. I make also code for PCs running a 32 bit RTOS, using free Borland C++5.5. I think it deserves some of your attention.
