can you just comment out lines

assert (c == EOF || c == '\n');

in as/asranlib/asranlib.c and as/link/lkar.c files an retry to compile them?

It seems that your ar uses the "'" character instead '\n' for padding.
I'm surprised about such differences in behavior among linux 
distributions...

Please let me know about the result.
