Is this just a speculation or you have a proof? All gputils work well 
with both formats and I don't know for any other utility (except 
Microchip ones) that uses Microchip coff files (I checked the gpsim, 
which uses .cod files). The main driver for this change was Microchip: 
Microchip utilities don't understand the old Microchip coff format any 
more. Actually here you are right: if someone used -C for Microchip 
compatibility, he will have problems. But I believe there are not a lot 
of such cases and the fix is trivial. Let see what other user will say.
