Thank you - yes, I believe I can use named address spaces to achieve my goal. Not quite as simply as using malloc() & long pointers, but simply enough. FWIW, the relevant section of the Embedded C standard made me doubt my own intelligence and worth as a human being, whereas the much terser explanation in the SDCC manual made perfect sense.
