Thank you - yes, I believe I can use named address spaces to achieve my
goal.  Not quite as simply as using malloc() & long pointers, but simply
enough.

FWIW, the relevant section of the Embedded C standard made me doubt my
own intelligence and worth as a human being, whereas the much terser
explanation in the SDCC manual made perfect sense.  

If the author(s) of that manual ever happen to be in Melbourne
(Australia), it's my round at the pub :)
