Thanks. I've created bug report ticket #3084. Was torn between a bug or
feature ticket - let me know if inappropriate as a bug, and I'll re-file
as feature request.
In the meantime, it would be great if anyone could give some feedback on
my peephole ruleset. I'm not 100% sure I have covered all the bases with
the conditions/restrictions.

code. Maybe part of it can even be done in code generation instead of
peephole optimization.
