hey sunny kids-
"Grendel" by john gardener is one of my favourite books- it's
masterfully written and contains multitudes of levels on which one can
think about the book- the first being that it's simply an entertaining
pleasure to read. Gardener is a master of various prosaic methods- the
say he switches into various narrative positions and even different
literary methods (ie, into dramatic form, poetic form, etc.) is nearly
unprecidented. It's my favourite existentialist work since kafka's "the
trial" which was written some 4 decades earlier. If you've ever read
Dan's comments on the book, you know that the song is very closely
related to the book. My seniour AP English prof in high school had us
read the book, and I showed her the lyrics for Sunny Day's Grendel and
she thought they were a beautiful summation of the heart of the book.
So I played her the song, and she really liked it, so I think that now
she plays it for her students at some point during the reading of the
book! How cool is that?!? She's in her 50's, and not a big "rock" fan,
but she could see the power and the beauty in that song- sooo cool : )
