What you want to do is tune each tom to a note like a three-finger chord
on a piano. The smallest to the largest, being tuned highest to lowest,
of course. With your drum stick, hit the drum head at the lug while
you're tightening with your drum key until you get the desired note.
Then, with your drum key match that note all the way around the tom.
Tighten each lug directly across each other, don't go
clockwise/counter-clockwise. Follow these steps for each drum, and go
down a step in the chord for each tom. I believe you want your snare to
be much higher than the smallest tom.
Feel free to experiment with other sounds, etc, and have fun!
