Well, today was several firsts for me. It was the first time I went to
the Fenix club in Pioneer Square, Seattle, the first time I legally went
to an over 21 show, and the first time I actually paid to see Goodness
play. (hey, fifth time I've seen them, and I've only paid once, 2 were
free shows, one was bumpershoot, and there was loads of other stuff that
I paid for in the price of the ticket, the third they snuck me and my
mate Andy in, which was nice). So anyways, the opening band was Bullet
Train To The Sun (www.bullettraintothesun.com I think), and they were
pretty damned spiffy. I saw them open for Goodness last time I saw
them, and they were great. They're all pretty darn young (I would say
under 25), and the lead guitarist, Eric, has great fingerwork. Next up
were Alien Crime Syndicate, who were probably the funnest opening band
I've ever seen, except maybe Death Cab For Cutie. The lead
singer/guitarist and bassist were just everwhere, laughing, joking,
having a blast, while the drummer (who was also the drummer from Micro
Mini), and the rhythm guitarist pounded out the beat. They're wacky,
offhand kind of punk/pop stuff. They don't take themselves seriously at
all. Then finally on came Goodness, and I would have to say that this
was the best gig I've seen them at. It was a last minute arrangement
thing, as the gig was organized mid week. They were incredibly
energetic, just connected with each other and the audience so incredibly
well. Carrie Akre was a screaming/dancing/cooing/slinking/sexy banshee,
as she is whenever they play live, and she looked gothic with black
marker "tattoos" and heavy black eyeliner Garth and Danny, the two
amazing guitarists were their usual stellar selves, Fiia, the bassist
(who I heard from Carrie, is pregnant, and is leaving the band in August
to pursue her family and side band Miracle Baby, all the best Fiia) sang
the loudest of any of the other shows I've seen her at, and was more
energetic tonight than most, jumping and bouncing around the stage. And
of course Chris, the drummer, was his usual loud thumping and cheesily
grinning self. What set this concert apart from the other was their
usual between/after song jam sessions were much longer, more intricate,
and this time even came smack dab in the middle of the song. Plus their
setlist was EXACTLY what I wanted. They played all my faves.
Superwise, Labour Day, Wicked Eye, Sincerly Yours (a song that always
(now) reminds me of my dear heart, Sarah) Bitter Man, Anthem, I'd
Rather, Turn The World Around, and a song that I'd never heard of,
hopefully something new. For Sincerly Yours a girl we later found out
was one of Carrie's good friends climbed up on stage and joins in the
song. She sang really well too, which I was surprised to hear. Well,
needless to say it was an amazing show made so much better by the band
chatting with the audience, laughing, joking. Everyone had a blast. I
can't wait to see them again. Actually it should be tomorrow!
Have fun, ya'all!!!
