hello list, here's the skinny on the june 22nd show at the bricks in slc,
ut.
-- i arrive at 5:30 (doors were at 7:00) with my "nothing but black metal
for me" friend, sarah. run into dan, jeremy, and will. make
small talk about the heat, gush about the new album, blah, blah, blah. no
one else was around (fans, that is) and it was splendid.
-- doors open as scheduled and am delighted to find that the club has an
outdoor stage/floor.
-- no knife takes to the stage. will refrain from opining.
-- sarah and myself are rooted firmly between dan and jeremy's stage
positions. the band takes the stage (all of 18" off the ground) and we find
ourselves inches from jeremy and the bearded wonder.
-- they start the set w/ fool in the photograph, kick into pillars, then
continue on with one, the ocean, killed by an angel, snibe, guitar and
video games, disappear, tearing in my heart, j'nuh, and faces in
disguise. encore includes 8, in cirlces, and the rising tide.
-- any difficulties the band may have had in seattle were not to be found in
salt lake city. the sound was good, the delivery was intense. i love
that dan is splitting his signal between the matcless and the marshall.
it gives the band the balls i felt they were lacking on hiftbso.
-- you might be interested to know that those little solo lines on the ocean
and tearing in my heart are NOT synthesizers. that is dan hoerner
himself armed with a gibson, an effects board, and a whole helluva lot of
passion. in fact, he had a rack effect set up by his amp, but i couldn't
tell what it was. jeremy had an effects board identical to dan's and they
were both Boss, though i couldn't tell you what they were aside from the
brand name.
-- everything they played was incredible beyond belief. it still hasn't
sunk in. j'nuh was as surreal and long as ever. 8 was aggresive as all
fuck. snibe was heavier than any metal song i've ever heard. when they
played the ocean and tearing in my heart, all one could do was stand
frozen and listen in disbelief of the beauty that eminated.
-- most interesting was the rising tide. at the very end when they start
doing the ambient stuff, dan closes his eyes and revels in the feedback
he's creating. one thinks they are all but finished, but no, jeremy,
will, and the hired guns start slamming into a groove that is not to be
found on any sdre release. jeremy sings a few lines, the band jams. it
was incredibly melodic and tasteful. after the show, i asked dan what
that ending was. he said that "we just were goofing around."
-- the fact that it was outside, with the sun setting, the clouds turning a
pinkish-purple hue added incredibly to the atmosphere.
-- oh, and my "nothing but black metal for me " friend, sarah, said she had
never seen a band play with such conviction and could do nothing but sing
their praises the whole way home.
