Sunny Day Real Estate guitarist Dan Hoerner rained on Dave Grohl's parade in
an interview Wednesday (July 19):

Three years have passed since the former Nirvana drummer convinced bassist
Nate Mendel not to return to his reuniting Seattle quartet and remain a Foo
Fighter. But Hoerner is apparently not over the sting.

"I'm not angry at Nate," Hoerner says. "If anything, I pity him. He's an
excellent musician and he's so much better than the crap that he plays. If I
was forced to play that fucking shit day in and day out, I would hang myself
for sure."

Sunny Day Real Estate reunited as a trio, featuring singer Jeremy Enigk on
bass in the studio and a touring bassist on the road. The group released its
second post-reunion album, The Rising Tide, on Time Bomb in June.

"Having the kind of connection Jeremy and I already had, just
instantaneously, is so much more powerful than trying to have an extra cook
in the kitchen," Hoerner says. "So even if Nate wanted to come back now,
there's no way."

Mendel and SDRE drummer William Goldsmith were recruited by Grohl into the
fledgling Foos in 1995, but Goldsmith left due to creative tensions the next
year. After Grohl laid down the drums on 1997's The Colour and the Shape,
the singer filled his drum stool vacancy with Taylor Hawkins. SDRE announced
it was reforming that same year, with all four original members.

"Nate actually quit the Foo Fighters for a couple of days at one point,"
Hoerner explains. "But I think he got a lot of money offered up to him and
it's not so easy to walk away from something like that."

Hoerner re-emphasized the sympathy he claims to hold for his former
colleague. "I know for a fact that he loves Sunny Day Real Estate and I know
he's gonna listen to The Rising Tide and feel that loss of not being a part
of it," he said.
