Well, at the S.F. show they also said that they were going to tour again and
play the older stuff, but I don't know if they were serious or just being
facetious. Dan even took a moment to ask the crowd what we'd like to hear..
so of course I shouted out Red Elephant, 48, Grendel, Sometimes, 5/4,
Waffle... others were shouting pretty much the same... um.. Seven of course,
and I even heard a request for "Spade and Parade" and someone yelled
"Bucket!"... Dan commented that Grendel would be a hard one but it'd be
really great if they could pull that off! I hope they were even
semi-serious about touring again and playing the older material! Maybe they
could take some type of "requests" via this list or the website and get a
kick ass tour put together! It would be best if they would play all the
stuff they haven't been playing live the last few years i.e. J'nuh, In
Circles, 8, Angel... those are great songs but we've already seen then played
and it's not like song spots in a SDRE setlist are at a premium or anything
(if only they'd play just a bit longer)! As for the show last night Jeremy's
voice was excellent! He sounded better than the last few times I've seen
them and his energy was incredible! a song like 48 would have been perfect
last night... I can only Imagine how "Pitiful boy" would have sounded last
night with all the sweat pouring off of Jeremy.. oh well.. maybe next time..
My only gripes were that at times some of the guitar parts were too low - you
couldn't always hear the subtle slides and stuff that really texture some of
the songs.. and of course they played too much new stuff - but what the heck
do I expect since they are touring to support it... I did my part and
actually bought the rising tide last night, and I guess they did those songs
justice live, sorta like The Prophet on the last tour... As for the "old
stuff" vs. the "new stuff" thing, I just prefer the older material. Kinda
like my favorite band back in 1990, Toad the Wet Sprocket. The had 2 very
powerful and emotional cd's that were held very high to the dozen or so
people who had them... thier other cd's garnered them with a little bit more
success and were definately much better crafted songs, but just weren't as
good as the first 2 cds. There are tons of bands out there that can write
good songs, but noone wants to listen to them because they lack the
intangibles that touch and move the listener. The Rising Tide may do that
for some people and that's good for them, but is has nowhere near the impact
on me as Diary or LP2.. But that's just comparing SDRE to SDRE.. The Rising
Tide is still better than 90% of the crap out there now... Steve.
Oh yeah.. I'm sure that most of the people in the bay area know this already,
but Jimmy Eat World will be in S.F. this Sunday... hoping it's a good show...
