This
whole thread of conversation is interesting to me. It seems there are a lot of
SDRE fans for a lot of different reasons.
Over
the years, SDRE has progressed along several lines. In the beginning, people
tended to lump them under the emo category. I've never particularly agreed with
that myself. Granted, The Blankets Were the Stairs could have made Diary alone
and fits well within that genre. However, I've never been particularly
comfortable with the rest of the album being labelled as
such.
By the
time How It Feels came out, the very last traces of emo (if any) were all
but gone. What to call them at that point is a bit beyond me and my tipsy state
at the moment. Is "awesome" too broad?
The
Rising Tide represents a whole new stage in Sunny Day's evolution. The whole emo
feel is definitely gone. One might even call it prog rock (and I have
heard it called this, on multiple occasions), though I don't welcome the
connotations that label carries (Shall I compare thee to Rush? Thou are more
lovely and more temperate).
The
point of this whole thing is that any given fan's favourite album will strongly
depend on when in the evolution (s)he became a fan and what
style (s)he prefers. The guy who just recently intimated that he hopes
TRT is a joke obviously came onto the scene early on, and became attached to the
early style. However, I think the latest sound is likely to attract more
and more fans, for better or worse.
I
would like to issue a cry for solidarity. Unfortunately, I know that some people
are petty and feel that because they have been a fans longer, they have the
right to issue invective against newer fans. I would hate to see this list
digress into that. Diary fans, exercise a little open-mindedness for the new
direction Sunny Day may be taking and recognize that it may very well be more
listenable, which is in no way negative. TRT fans, be prepared for something a
little rawer, a little more edgy when going back to listen to the older albums
-- you may not like it at first, but you will, I promise (I was a TRT
fan).
All
this aside, however, I would like to point out something. My personal
preferences aside (for reference, I think my personal favourite is How It
Feels), I cannot think of a single song that, whether I like it overall or not,
does not have at least one section that is absolutely amazing. Would you
agree?

I'm a brand new fan too. Bought rising tide and fell in love with them.
Then I ordered all the other cds from amazon.com and they just arrived today!
Can't wait to listen to the rest.
