I am personally drawn to Sunny Day Real Estate (as well as some of my other favorite
bands) because of the amount of emotion and themselves that they put into their
songwriting (as well as playing live). Any four or five guys can get onto a stage and
sing, but to truly capture greatness, you have to put a lot of yourself into what you
do. When I first heard Diary, I was flabergasted. Everything from the beautiful,
poetic lyrics to the harsh beauty of the instruments to the almost etheral, haunting
voice of Jeremy. I was immediately hooked.
At the time, I was coming out of a hardcore/metal faze, so I still loved the sometimes
harsh distorted guitars, but was soft enough for me as my musical tastes grew.
When LP2 came out, it was still the same, and I loved every bit. As HIFTBSO, came
out, my tastes were becoming even softer, so I was even more impressed. I even like
The Rising Tide, even though they have gotten a lot of flak for it. True, it's not as
great as the other three, but I still deem it worthy.
I have a great deal of respect for Dan, Will, and Jeremy. I think that together, they
can accomplish anything in music.
