Hi Kris,
  The only (and I really mean only) way I've ever gotten consitant success
to via Macports.  I do the following:

sudo port selfupdate
sudo port install ruby
sudo port install rb-rubygems
sudo port install graphicsmagick # like imagemagick, but newer and with less
suck

#Gems via Ruby gems
sudo gem install rmagick


Note that if you move to macports Ruby from the OS X distrubuted Ruby, you
get to reinstall all your gems... but frankly I feel like its worth it.
