[SDRuby] Starter app?

I'm creating a Rails app that I want to show off that needs authentication, pagination, and a few other things. I looked at some starter apps that may save some time, including BaseApp,  Bort, and Blank. But I liked the one by activefx at http://github.com/activefx/restful_authentication_tutorial/tree/master . I tried it a couple weeks ago, went to something else, then came back to it (cloning it again), only to find it now gives me an error, where it didn't before ( http://railsforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=14216&p=16). :-( (any suggestions?)

So what do folks do? Start from scratch each time, adding plugins as desired? Any starter apps to recommend? If not, how do you add functionality like "forgot password" ? Roll your own?
