Is "*" italics or bold? The idea is that you don't have to think in terms of "bold" or "italics". Those are implementation details anyway. Really, you should just think in terms of *emphasis* and **stronger emphasis** (you can use '*' or '_'), which convey the actual meaning. These produce <em></em> and <strong></strong>, respectively. I can't think of a better way to do this. The meaning is immediately obvious (in both source and formatted forms!) and __much faster__ than having to click on a button.
