While it feels somehow wrong, I've actually ended up finding an ancillary support column to be useful. In addition to easily effecting case-insensitive sorting, it made it easier to deal with other sorting considerations, such as occasions when I wanted to also ignore leading articles (a, an, the) when sorting. Of course, I'm mentioning this with no knowledge of your space constraints.
