I've always been a big fan of Shopify and have set it up for several clients. I ended up making an iPhone app to help Shopify users manage their inventories, and the CEO of Shopify was nice enough to recommend me for an article that ended up getting posted on Smart Money and The Wall Street Journal Online :)
If you want to build a Rails-based system for managing class schedules, you could post new classes and update inventory (spots available) via the API and then have purchases update your schedule management system via callbacks.
