I propose talking a little about Cyc this week.

<http://cyc.com>

I worked on Cyc for a couple of years, and I just recently dusted off my old
Cyc knowledge to see about getting Ruby talking to Cyc. It turns out to be
pretty easy with JRuby.

Much of the 25-year Cyc project is available for your use, for free. If you've
an interest in AI, or if on a more practical level, you'd like to be able to
process text with a more nuanced understanding of its meaning, this talk will
be for you.

I'm planning on demonstrating Cyc generally, and then just touching on how to
access Cyc from Ruby. My plan is to develop some code and show off a more
practical application later.

For homework before the talk if you're really interested, you can download and
poke the free version of Cyc (or just access the online content):

This will nicely maximize your confusion for my talk. :-)

Note that you need 4GB RAM to run it. To run it on a Mac, download the Linux
version, and follow the instructions on my blog (you'll need Java 1.6):
