I use Fink when I need something that's bound to have dependencies and not be available natively.
I actually use the system ruby that comes with Mac OS, and now 'git' is available in a native mac package, so I don't have to go to fink too often. But it's nice to have my missing unix tools like 'watch' just a quick install away, and it makes it possible to build big Gnome apps at all.
