How about a nasty workaround?

def winsleep(seconds)
  Kernel.system("ping 127.0.0.1 -n #{seconds} -w 1000")
end

Do I win the ugliest hack award?

sleep(60) appears to sometimes sleep forever (instead of 1 minute) on

Has anyone run into this and found a fix, other than switching to
1.8.6 or 1.9?

Thanks.
