I use Haml, it closes tags for me automatically and minimize the amount of markup I need to write.
Also IMHO Rails is far more complete framework than Sinatra, I have developed in Sinatra and all I can say it is a pretty cool Rack DSL nice to get small things done fast, but in the end I ended up missing much of the Rails goodness. But like I said this is just MHO. Good luck with your project.
