I have no experience with the MBP Retina. I did use an 11" Air as my work machine for a couple of weeks, and found it totally capable as a development machine.
It seems like the MBP Retina is an air... super thin, inflexible with certain upgrades, etc. I'd suppose the weight difference comes from the display and case size. IMO it really turns on how often you're clamshelled with an external display. For me it's about 50/50, so 15" is a huge selling point (although, my vision is awful). My next machine will definitely be the MBP Retina, even though I will have to shell out ridiculous extra money for the latest and greatest in non-upgradable parts. I recently got a MacBook Pro Retina at work and have to say, it's a damn impressive machine. Fast, gorgeous display, thinner and lighter than my current 15" MB Pro (that's 3 1/2 years old) but still heavier than an Air. I'm debating getting a new MacBook for Rails/Ruby development and can't decide between a 13" Air or a 15" Retina. Anyone care to chime in with their own experiences or analyses?
