Next month on October 4th, SD Ruby is hosting its first Newbie Night.

If you are new to Ruby or Ruby on Rails, or have been on the fence about coming
to SDRuby, this night is just for you. Even if you're a long time SD Ruby
member or a Rails expert, this is a great time to bring friends or coworkers
who want to learn.

= OUR GOAL =

The goal here is to let people know they are welcome at SD Ruby, even if they
aren't Rails Ninjas or Ruby Pirates or whatever. We frequently speak with folks
who feel like they don't know enough to attend our meetings... but we want to
make it clear that the only required skill is showing up. Everyone is welcome!

We want to show people how awesome Ruby is without having to be bogged down in
configuring a full development environment on everyone's laptop.

We'll be doing a brief "Rails Starter" demo where we demonstrate how to create
a basic Rails application, including routes, models, controllers, views,
activerecord, gems, etc.

= MEETING =

At 7:30, we'll start installing and configuring systems. The demo will start at
8pm.

At that point we'll break into two groups. The first group will consist of
everyone who installed the image successfully. If anyone is still struggling
with installation issues, they'll join the second group and move out to the
hallway so they can get help on a case-by-case base.

The first group will get a brief tutorial and an extended Q&A session. We may
also repeat the tutorial for the second group, as time allows.

We'll then run the raffle and head over to Rock Bottom for beers. Beer will be
sponsored by the awesome MonkDev Academy
(http://www.monkdevacademy.com/courses/)!

Please RSVP on Meetup.com if you have a chance
http://www.meetup.com/sdruby/events/76195582/ (if not, come anyway)

= HELP WANTED =

To make this happen, we need your help! If you can help in one of these areas,
please send email the mailing list with how you can help.

== Spread The Word ==

This is a big one. We need to get the word out to as many places as we can
think of.

- Have coworkers or friends who want to learn Ruby or Rails?

- Can you make or post fliers at a co-working space or coffee shop?

- Do you have a hook up with one of the campuses (I'm especially looking for
someone who knows about the internal UCSD digital bulletin board)?

- Have other great ideas where to get the word out?

== Help Test Our Virtual Machine ==

Before the meeting, we need a few people to test our installer. This will mean
downloading our VMWare image and installing it, and making sure it's bug free.
(We'll probably do this next week.)

== Volunteer During The Meeting ==

- We need lots of folks to help us set up and go over the install procedure.
You'll then be in charge of helping others with what to do as people show up.

- We need a few greeters to help direct traffic, get people signed up for the
raffle, explains what's going on, etc. We'll have you stationed at the doors to
the building to help folks head to the right place.
