I'd recommend opening the postgresql_adapter (bundle open activerecord) and add a debugger, pry or raise statement to @connection_parameters. See what is getting passed down from your app. It doesn't make sense for the role to be postgres instead of scott (role and username are fairly interchangeable with postgres). I'm wondering if there is a database.yml typo or if you need to set role in addition to username or something.
