It came out after I learned Ruby but I would expect Learn Ruby the
Hard Way to suit you pretty well: http://ruby.learncodethehardway.org/

Once you have skimmed that, if the to-do app appeals to you, try
Building Awesome Command-Line Applications in Ruby. The LA Ruby group
is just finishing that book and I liked it pretty well. It doesn't
really teach the language - but it does teach the Ruby and Unix
ecosystems.
