Hi there,

My name is Abe and I've moved to San Diego (from Montana) to change gears
and find work as a Ruby on Rails developer. My background is in economics,
statistics, and data analytics, and while I enjoy all those topics, I also
want to develop products. Why Rails? Because it's the framework that
impresses me the most. I like that it's opinionated and structured; I like
that it allows for quick minimum viable product creation; I like that while
it does a lot for you, it also exposes a lot of customization for tuning
and refinement.

I don't yet have a ton of experience in Rails--just enough to know that I
really enjoy the framework and the Ruby language. I've nearly completed the
Hartl Rails Tutorial, and feel like that provides a fairly good overview of
Rails development. I.e., if you enjoy the Hartl Rails Tutorial then you're
likely to enjoy the world of Rails development.

Beyond that experience with Rails, I have a lot of other related and
indirectly related programming experience. Academically, I have a lot of
experience with Java (three semesters), some with Python (one semester
including data structures and algorithms), some with R (the statistical
programming platform), and some with STATA. Professionally, I have robust
experience with SAS (Statistical Analysis Software), Excel, and
Access...including the use of VBA in both Excel and Access. I also have
extensive professional experience with SQL (and RDBMS's) having utilized it
in conjunction with an Enterprise Data Warehouse (running a commercial
version of PostgreSQL: Greenplum), Access databases, and local datasets.
I've also used SQL from Excel to pull data directly into Excel from a
database.

In short, I recognize that I'm not the guy you hire because you need a
product built ASAP. I'm the guy you hire, cheaper, and invest in who soon
turns into a valuable player on your team. I learn quickly, and play well
with others. I enjoy learning, and learning on-the-job. I thoroughly
believe that the fastest way to learn anything is just to do it--and that
you learn much faster when you're working on real problems, on real code,
with other peers who can mentor and guide you.

For $25/hr (or the equivalent salary), I'd like the opportunity to learn
Rails and become a meaningful part of your team. I'd prefer full-time
permanent, contract-to-hire, or apprenticeship type positions where I can
spend at least 40 hours a week really digging into Rails, learning, and
doing my darnedest to get up to speed and produce value for the team.

If I've said anything which interests anyone on this list, please get in
touch. Also, though my Github profile is relatively new, please do check it
out along with my LinkedIn profile. I've provided them below.

Thank you for reading. I look forward to hearing from you!

Warm regards,

Abe Burnett
