I've been using Ubuntu as my primary development environment for the last
few years. Getting the right hardware is very important. The situation is
much better now, but video drivers and X frustrated me countless times. I
can't comment on a specific laptop, but I recommend going with a certified
model:

I also recommend going with intels integrated GPU as you primary GPU. I
use the HD4000 and it works very well.

It looks like Ableton Live runs in wine, which is a windows emulation
layer. I've never been a huge fan of wine, but it looks like it works
well: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=2113

I'm not sure how much this helps, but good luck!
