I've been using Ubuntu as my primary development environment for the last few years. Getting the right hardware is very important. The situation is much better now, but video drivers and X frustrated me countless times. I can't comment on a specific laptop, but I recommend going with a certified model: http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/desktop/models/?csrfmiddlewaretoken=ZiGDJpTgOqJEKaDARZ1J4HTabntfxg5Z&query=&category=Laptop&level=Any&release=
I also recommend going with intels integrated GPU as you primary GPU. I use the HD4000 and it works very well. It looks like Ableton Live runs in wine, which is a windows emulation layer. I've never been a huge fan of wine, but it looks like it works well: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=2113 I'm not sure how much this helps, but good luck! --Dan On Fri, Nov 8, 2013 at 2:00 PM, Benjamin Wanicur <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi Ruby Peeps > > I'm considering getting a new laptop, and although I had a great > experience with my last macbook, I'm leaning towards buying something else > and just running linux on it.
