Our esteemed and foreign-roaming semi-former leader, Patrick, wrote the trucker 
gem for this sort of situation:

It's simple but effective. This doesn't mean you won't have problems -- I've 
never encountered a data migration task that didn't make me want to give up 
programming entirely -- but there's a good chance Trucker will be helpful.
