I have actually mostly gotten work from doing presentations at SD Ruby. Dig 
into an interesting Gem or other technology and give a presentation about it. 
Writing (a book or a blog are great).

Get involved in the community. Go to SD Ruby, maybe a Javascript or database 
meeting.
