This won't solve your problem completely.
But, in general, I recommend not using the scaffolding stuff. It's
brittle and only suited for the most basic of projects.
I'd also recommend using a select field for choosing authors (like
Nathan suggested). That way, users can just select authors by name:
<%= f.select :author_id, @authors.collect { |a| [a.name,a.id] } %>
