I've figured it out....there were several issues going on (including
the fact that I was incorrectly identifying the field names-I was
looking at an old schema).
The ultimate fix was going into the list.rhtml file of the scaffold
and changing
<% for column in Book.content_columns %>
to
<% for column in Book.columns %>
Once I removed the constraint of only showing CONTENT, both the
Primary ID and the Author_ID fields showed up and could be
incorporated into the form.
