The only other plugin I have seen that is so mind-blowingly easy, yet so awesomely powerful is acts_as_authenticated.
We started using acts_as_solr on Obsidian Portal - http:// www.obsidianportal.com and it's been a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it was super easy to get running. On the other hand, now I want to spend time playing with Solr, facets, and delayed commits rather than generating content. That's the curse for us technical types.
