I'm afraid I missed the beginning of this conversation.  Just wanted to
interject and put in a plug for jEdit, which I use.  As the name suggests,
it's Java-based; I've used it successfully on both Linux and OS X.  It has
plug-ins to support Ruby syntax, which I find adequate for my needs (though
I still consider myself a Ruby rookie).  I haven't figured out how to force
it to interpret extension-less filenames as Ruby, so I end up naming my
rakefiles "Rakefile.rb". :-)
