I'm afraid I missed the beginning of this conversation. Just wanted to interject and put in a plug for jEdit, which I use. As the name suggests, it's Java-based; I've used it successfully on both Linux and OS X. It has plug-ins to support Ruby syntax, which I find adequate for my needs (though I still consider myself a Ruby rookie). I haven't figured out how to force it to interpret extension-less filenames as Ruby, so I end up naming my rakefiles "Rakefile.rb". :-)

Matt, here is a way to make gEdit looks and behaves like textmate, http://railsforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=6596 I havn't done any rails work with it yet, so if you try it let me know if it's good as Emacs.
