If you're really serious in delivering email for business purposes I would
in general avoid trying to do any mass mailings yourself and use a
professional email delivery firm. Everybody hates spam and mail admins have
gotten more strict with who they will allow mail to be received from, using
blacklists, whitelists, reverse-DNS lookups like SPF, etc. that if you
really need to make sure your email is delivered use a firm. Some firms
have "most-favored nation status" with large ISPs like AOL, etc. so they
know if the sender is this firm they partner with they will give it a higher
degree of trust because they have relationships in place to make sure they
won't send junk to AOL. If you write a program that just starts spewing out
emails through an SMTP server your Inbox arrival percentage will not be as
high over time.
