Yeah, making viral apps on facebook can pay serious money. As of last week, I work for socialmedia, which started out as a slide and rockyou competitor with a suite of popular fb apps (trakzor, happy hour, food fight, etc) but is now also turning into an ad network that monetizes apps for developers. And I'm not sure I can give out numbers but yeah some of those kids are making a killing. I think it's because we're not doing the bullshit ad banner thing for the most part and dropping in recommendations to other apps instead.
The company is still small enough that I'll get a chance to make my own apps from soup to nuts (whenever I can sneak in the time between doing just UI design across all the internally-developed apps) so given the time constraints and general allergy towards php, I'm definitely hoping to work rails in if I can. Any other thoughts about rfacebook? Is that the preferred plugin?
