Got my invite today - first impressions is that the UI is fucking

i guess when i read 'natural language search' i was thinkn i could
type in a sentence like 'who the fuck painted mona lisa again?' and
voila.. arguably the same NE tactics used for the search could derive
PoS / volition from the query and avoid the [tho very cool] scrolling
options.. ?
I know there's some players from powerset on this list - how much can
yall give up abt how it works? I suppose i shouldve posted this on
the forums at powerlabs.. ni modo.
cool s**t tho..
Hey John, that's cool you got your invite and you're diggin' it so
far :) I'm one of the guys who moved up here to work at Powerset and
I've been working on Powerlabs a lot (I did a lot of the UI work on
the search demos and a couple other dudes did the UI on Powerlabs
itself...)
The thing with Labs is that at this point it's much more of a
technology demonstration than a "beta" version of what our final
product will be, hence the limited query patterns and stuff. We're
pretty much trying to steer users into doing the types of queries
that are more "natural language style" to show how our technology is
intended to work. Pretty soon, though, you should be able to just
type in your query (although I just tried "who the fuck painted mona
lisa again?" and it kind of choked, but "who painted the mona lisa?"
gave really good results ;) So, stick around for a bit and soon
enough it'll be a lot more free-reign...at the very least we're
probably going to make an open search box available as one of the
scrollable options, although you might need a lot of karma points to
get it.
As for *how* it works, I'm not really the person to ask, but I know
there's some insane stuff going on in the background. Our team
usually sends the queries off to the back end and formats the
results :) Van Pelt or Tom can probably chime in with some details
though.
(I'm cc'ing the new google groups list on this cause i'm not sure how
much longer the old list server will be up)
