Some mainframe COBOL developers think so. The whole matter hit the fan last fall when a Gartner Group analyst released some calculations claiming that it was not worth the trouble for a company to retrain COBOL programmers to handle Java applications, says this columnist. But whether the vendor can succeed remains to be seen. SOURCE: TechWeb http://www.techweb.com/wire/story/TWB20010514S0001 [3] "IBM leaves no stone unturned in search of revenue" The history of the computer industry is littered with companies that had a head start in some promising technology, only to squander it, leaving the field to rivals who were more alert. IBM has weathered the transitions better than many: it is at least still around to tell the tale and, after being derided for missing out on the final leg of the tech-industry boom, is showing greater resilience than most to the bust that has followed. But, conscious of the big markets it has failed to conquer, it has set out to hone the way it identifies and pursues promising new ideas. The site presents developers and users with audience, or resource-based navigation. In addition to being able to download the latest tools, developers and users can examine the latest software technologies and look at the technology contributions IBM is making to Linux. HAL Computer Systems has shut down its Web site and has laid off or relocated its staff, citing falling demand for large mainframe technology, stifling competition from IBM and Sun Microsystems and a reorganization within its parent company.(free registration required) SOURCE: NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/2001/05/14/technology/14HAL.html ======================================================== Additional Resources: ======================================================== * Join the discussion! Mainstream technology has never earned a significant notice from the society, but the election of a new president has brought aboard a new philosophy. The society has found it in its good graces to bestow its highest honor, a Fellowship of the Royal Society, to someone outside the circle of high science. Tim Berners-Lee, the man responsible for the World Wide Web's address system, was recently tossed a fellowship allowing him to rub elbows with the 360-year-old institution's elite.
