LEAD STORY:
"Nortel partners with EMC for metro storage nets"

Nortel Networks has discovered that at least half of the traffic that
runs across its OPTera metropolitan wide-area networking platform has
been coming from mainframe customers with EMC Symmetrix storage
systems. It makes sense then, that Nortel finalizes its deal with
EMC, which involves joint sales and support efforts and guarantees
that recommended configurations will work reliably together.

[1] "BEA systems up 11% after earnings release"

released quarterly results and raised its earnings forecast for its
current fiscal year.

[2] "IBM's change of direction"
IBM is king in the mainframe world and its IT services business is
tops, too. And, while its software division lags behind these two
markets in terms of revenue, some think IBM's software division is
pretty hot and it's only a matter of time before it's sizzling.

[3] "IBM sheds light on upcoming supercomputer"
Germany's most prestigious science institution has selected IBM to
build an ultra-powerful supercomputer. Incorporating IBM's eServer
POWER4 technology, the system is capable of running 3.8 trillion
calculations per second and is expected to be the fastest
non-classified supercomputer in Europe when completed in 2002.

[4] "Take that! Linux beats MS in benchmark test"
The Transaction Processing Performance Council released new data from
tests that shows that IBM's upcoming DB2 7.2 release running on Linux
2.4.3 outperforms SQL Server 2000 running on Windows 2000 in the
100GB category. IBM said the data should quiet critics who still
maintain that DB2 runs only on IBM hardware. Microsoft claims the
tests were not a fair comparison and downplayed the Linux role in the
test.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Funny money equals more time"

Money may not grow on trees, but it appears you can run some off in
your basement with a PC, a quality printer and a scanner - but not
without expecting to pay a stiff price if you're caught. The Secret
Service has noticed a significant upturn in the circulation of
counterfeit money and they've gotten downright proactive in fighting
funny money makers. Anyone caught with equipment for manufacturing
new bills or the paper they're printed on, faces 25% more prison time
than past convictions brought, according to new guidelines issued by
the U.S. Sentencing Commission. The guidelines, which are the first
to take into account a suspect's ability to counterfeit rather than
the stash of bills they're circulating, don't take effect for six
months.
